Chain care between services, in five minutes
Clean it, lube it, check the slack. A chain looked after every 500 miles lasts about twice as long as one that is ignored.

A chain and sprocket kit costs from $349 fitted here. Five minutes every 500 miles makes it last about twice as long.
Clean it
Put the bike on a stand, spray chain cleaner on a rag and wipe the rollers while you turn the wheel by hand. Never use a pressure washer on an O-ring chain.
Lube it warm
Lube the inside of the chain after a ride, while it is warm, and let it sit overnight so it doesn’t fling off onto the wheel.
Check the slack
Push the lower run up and down halfway between the sprockets. Your manual gives the range, usually about 1 to 1.5 inches. If one spot is tight and another loose, the chain is worn unevenly and is due.
