Valve checks: when the interval really matters
Most modern engines hold their clearances well, but a tight exhaust valve burns. Here is how we decide when to check, and what it costs.

The valve check is the most expensive item on most service schedules, so riders ask whether they can skip it. Sometimes you can stretch it. Sometimes you really can’t.
Why clearances change
Valves wear into their seats over time, and the gap at the top closes. A valve that can’t close fully leaks hot gas past its face and burns, and that is a cylinder head job.
What it costs here
From $425 on most twins and from $695 on inline fours, gaskets included. If a shim needs changing, we text you the clearance numbers before we do it.
When to check early
Hard starting when hot, an idle that hunts, or a lot of high-rpm riding. Then we check before the book says so, and write the readings on the repair order.
Want us to do it for you? A person answers, Tuesday to Saturday.
